Frequently asked questions

  • What are the notice periods for changing health insurance providers?
    • There is a two-month notice period to the end of the month. For example, if you give notice on a day in December, you will start with your new health insurance provider on 1 March.
    • There is a 12-month commitment to the new health insurance fund.
  • Are there any risks involved in changing health insurance providers?

    The change only takes effect once the new health insurance provider has confirmed the change in writing. This means that there is no risk of losing insurance cover. As long as the old health insurance provider has not confirmed the change, you remain with your old insurance. 

  • What options are there for special termination?

    If you change employers, you can change your health insurance provider immediately. The 12-month commitment to the new health insurance provider also does not apply. This option is available in the first 14 days after starting employment. It also applies if your insurance status changes (e.g. from private to statutory or from family insurance to your own health insurance). 

  • Does the employer/employment agency need to be informed?

    The new health insurance fund will confirm the new health insurance fund to the employer via an electronic registration procedure. The employee informs the employer informally about the change. In the event of unemployment, the employment agency must be informed. 

  • Can I switch from another regional AOK to AOK Nordost?

    Yes, if one of the following conditions applies:

    • You live, work or study in Berlin, Brandenburg or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
    • Your spouse or partner is insured with AOK Nordost.
  • Under what circumstances must you cancel your health insurance?

    You must cancel your membership when you leave the statutory health insurance system – for example, if you switch to private health insurance or move abroad. 

  • Can I change my statutory health insurance provider when I change employers?
    • When starting a new job, employees who are subject to compulsory insurance have the option of changing their health insurance provider immediately. This option is available for the first 14 days after starting employment.
    • There is no need to cancel your previous health insurance. The usual binding periods do not apply either.
  • What should I do if I need to see a doctor but have not yet received my new health insurance card?

    Please contact us before visiting the doctor if you have not yet received your card or if you have lost it. We will send you a certificate as a temporary replacement. Please present this document to your doctor or dentist. They will then be able to bill us.

  • Who pays which contributions?

    As a statutory health insurance provider, our contributions depend on the insured person's individual circumstances. You can find more information on contribution rates at AOK Nordost contribution rates.
