Important information for students from EU countries / treaty countries
Treaty countries: Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and Tunisia do not have an European Insurance Card (EHIC).
In Germany all students need health insurance. If you are covered by statutory insurance in your home country, you can have this coverage recognised by a German health insurance company.
If you are covered by statutory insurance in your home country, you can have this coverage recognised by the AOK.
In order for us to be able to verify this, we need a copy of your proof of insurance from your home country, e.g. the European Insurance Card (EHIC), a provisional certificate (PEB = provisional replacement certificate) or a certificate of entitlement to non-cash benefits if you are staying in Germany (e.g. A/T 11), which you will receive from your insurance provider in your home country. Please attach these to the following application and send it to:
AOK NordWest

or visit one of our Customer Centres to be advised personally. Please complete the application in full. As soon as we have received and checked your documents, we will send the relevant notification to the university and send you a confirmation to your address in Germany.
Important note:
If you take up employment, an internship or self-employment during your studies in Germany, you will be covered by statutory health insurance. Please inform us about the beginning and the end of this activity and provide us with supporting documentation.
We wish you a successful course of studies.
Health insurance for students from non-EU states with no social security agreement
If you come from a country that was not mentioned above and would like to study in Germany, you will need to take out insurance with a private or statutory provider, such as AOK NordWest.
