Information for international students
You come to Germany to study? Welcome! A lot of things will be different for you here. To prepare you to study successfully, we will take care of your health insurance. As you might know, you may not enrol in Germany without a health insurance. This means that you must not forget to take out a health insurance either in your home country or immediately after arriving in Germany. We will now show you how this is done!

Students with an European Health Insurance Card
Students with an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are also considered to possess a recognised health insurance in Germany.
The following countries recognise the EHIC: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain.
To be able to enrol at a German university, you will need to prove that you have taken out a health insurance. You may do this by simply taking your EHIC to a branch of the AOK PLUS and having an insurance certificate issued.
Students from countries without EHIC
All you need to do is to go to an agency of the AOK PLUS. There you can fill in an application for a Student Health Insurance (KVdS). Please bring your study certificate with you which proves that you are about to take up your studies in Germany. The AOK PLUS will then provide you with your insurance certificate which you will then be able to present to your university.
You will be paying a monthly contribution of 85,87 Euros for your health insurance. The chart gives an overview on the current health ensurance and nursing care insurance contributions:
Health ensurance | Nursing care insurance | Total | |
---|---|---|---|
In general (as from 01.01.2021) | 85,87 € | 22,94 € | 108,81 € |
People without children, aged 23 and above (as from 01.01.2021) | 85,87 € | 24,82 € | 110,69 € |
Students who are enrolling in a language course, attending a study course of lectures or doing their doctorate or a graduate programme or postgraduate studies as a “Meisterschüler” or an elective postgraduate course or undertaking additional studies or continuing their education are not entitled to a student health insurance.
